Some things don’t age well and I really had the impression I was going to be reading a story with Ewoks in it. Yet the new CEO of the company is prepared to play whatever dirty pool he finds necessary to protect a literally incalculable monetary windfall. While not immoral, he spends his time acting in his own best interest and is unconcerned about breaking rules or telling the occasional fib in order to get his way.

This whole book reads like a technical scallzi on what to do “in case of,” and didn’t make me feel warm or “fuzzy” in the least. I knew what story I had to put down. The assessment of the Fuzzies’ intelligence is first made here by Holloway’s ex-lover, biologist Isabel Wangai.

Once I had permission, I sold the book to Tor, and I did indeed make money — and so did the Fuzzy rights holders, because they get a cut of what I make, which is, of course, both right and appropriate. Le Guin and her novel The Word for World is Forest by expanding the understanding of Fuzzy culture and further developing the relationship between people and that species.
Not only did the original science fiction authors blow my generation’s minds with their never before imagined serious and heart-rending moralistic space adventures, after them were decades of a writer explosion in extrapolated scientific imagination and snarky baby boomer humor that the ‘golden’ era of science fiction couldn’t match, since many boomer generation authors never had enjoyed the back-breaking soul-destroying worries of farm labor or ever been without Saturday morning cartoons on TV.
Morgan Golias I just started, and I assume they probably would have mentioned that right away and I didn’t see any mention of a breed for Carl at all. He has also just discovered the fuzzys, a cat-like animal that, as the novel goes on, may prove to be sentient. Then I find out it’s been remade, by Scalzi no less. Well worth a read. Is Scalzi’s reimagining of an sf classic the forerunner of a new age where book execs go the route of Hollywood and commission people to rewrite old books instead of writing original ones?
Once it was done, my agent approached the Piper natlon and Penguin about getting their permission to try to sell the book.
I am not sure how I missed them growing up. Holloway is skeptical of Isabel’s opinion — and admits he’s got good motivation to be — but with the help of her current flame, attorney Mark Sullivan, they try to come up with a plan to satisfy the question of the Fuzzies’ possible sapience that will not collide headlong with the full fury of an interplanetary corporate entity with endless resources to bear.
Tasty and filling but kind of empty and I never want it twice in a row. That’s not to say Holloway doesn’t rise to the occasion to defend the Fuzzys. He’s quite the rascal. Specifically, Fuzzy Nation appro Warning: Isabel comes to believe the fuzzies sapient, which would require Zaracorp to leave the planet.
Some Useful Clarifications About Fuzzy Nation – Whatever
A quick, fun, humorous story about ecology, sustainable living, and ethics. I feel like Scalzi’s goal is to create a “worst case scenario” and then proceed to figure out how his characters can work their way through it.
He has the mind of a Wall Street quant – able to think three steps ahead in a multidimensional game, but he hides this most valuable asset. ZaraCorp, like any company, has a primary mission to make money, especially as the company is publicly traded.
If humans exploit a planet that has a sentient species on it, what are the consequences? Good to stay on top of it fuzzh this.
Then, in the wake of an accidental cliff collapse, Jack discovers a seam of unimaginably valuable jewels, to which he manages to lay legal claim just as ZaraCorp is cancelling their contract with him for his part in causing the collapse.
I hated this book. I mean, I like the guy, but his writing is like Kraft Mac and Cheese for me.
It took me a while to warm up to ecalzi writing so that it read fluently. I was almost swearing to myself that I was reading a Heinlein novel that was updated to modern standards until I realized, for the tenth time, that I was reading one of my favorite modern authors, Mr. Beam Piper committed suicide.
Yes, it is authorized — after I wrote the novel I sent it to the rights-holders of the Piper estate and asked vuzzy to try to get it published. Small, bipedal, intensely curious and undeniably clever, the Fuzzies as Jack names them seem to be truly remarkable animals. Or rather, his dog Carl, blows it up, since Holloway has illegally trained his dog to push the sclzi for the explosives to be set off. There were a lot of very well placed checks and balances in place that were so simple and very effective. Now he is not as well known as you are, but The Time Machine is more important classic than Little Fuzzy.
